Ukiyo-e is a traditional Japanese art style that flourished during the Edo period (17th–19th centuries), especially in cities like Edo (now Tokyo). The term means “pictures of the floating world,” referring to the fleeting pleasures of urban life—such as kabuki actors, courtesans, beautiful women, landscapes, and seasonal scenes. Ukiyo-e is best known for its woodblock prints, which feature bold outlines, flat areas of vibrant color, strong compositional balance, and decorative patterns. Artists like Hokusai and Hiroshige elevated the genre with iconic landscape prints that emphasized dramatic perspectives and stylized natural elements. The style’s clean lines and graphic simplicity later influenced Western Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters, making Ukiyo-e one of Japan’s most globally recognized artistic traditions.

You can also create a vectorized version. It works best for images with flat colors and clear edges. Vectorized images can be zoomed to very high resolutions without any loss of quality—just click the “Vectorize” button.
